every match, scoring 52 goals over 8 games and conceding just 9.  Huge thanks to
everyone who turned out to play these matches and a special thank you to Bob who
turned out to umpire all but one of the games

1st XI Captain Sam Traill gets into his new role in a BIG way!

“The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determination
that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand.”
Vince Lombardi – (American football coach)

Team/Disciples,

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you all to this new and exciting season. I am sure
that most of you will agreed that last season with a settled squad of players was largely
enjoyable. I hope it also made you realise that we are more than capable of gaining
promotion.

In a similar manner to that of the FA, this summer has witnessed a change at the top.
The symbolic devolvement of power from Pete “the ladies favourite” Beckham to Sam
“the hardman” Terry heralds a new era for Marden and it falls upon me to draw every
ounce of enthusiasm and talent from your rested souls. In contrast with the FA we have
decided to include the departing skipper in the squad for this forthcoming season and I
look forward to drawing upon his wealth of experience and tactical nous.

I have assembled a rigorous pre-season agenda aimed at ending the traditional Marden
penchant of starting the season slowly. The plan is as follows:

Sunday 20th August             Training session at Marden: 11am – 1pm

Bank Holiday Weekend
Those not playing at East Grinstead Festival are encouraged to practice their stick skills
in the vicinity of their own homes.

Saturday 2nd September      Friendly match TBC – possible 1st/2nd’s practice match

Sunday 3rd September        Training session at Marden: 11am – 1pm

Saturday 9th September        Friendly v South Saxons (venue TBC)

Saturday 16th September         Friendly v Old Bordenians

Sunday 17th September (H)        Training session at Marden: (Time TBC)

Saturday 23rd September        Friendly v Old Williamsonians  (venue TBC)

Sunday 24th September        Training session at Marden: (Time TBC)

Saturday 30th September        League match v Old Bordenians

Sunday 1st October         Training session at Marden: (Time TBC)

At the AGM we decided to abandon midweek training sessions due to lack of
attendance. In place we have opted for 1st team squad training sessions throughout the
season on alternate Sundays which we hope we can use to tackle specific deficiencies
exposed the previous day as well as improving basic skills and fitness levels. These
sessions are also intended to introduce various youth team members to mens hockey in
order to help produce the next generation of Henry Lee’s and Tom Horton’s (God forbid).

Additionally, please bring along any friends/brothers/sons that might be interesting in
playing some hockey this season. It is certainly a case of the more the merrier.

I very much look forward to seeing as many of you as possible on Sunday morning.

Samuel
